CVH MEMBER CONGRESS, Saturday 4 June 2016. CVH is planning an exciting event on June 4th that we hope you'll SAVE THE DATE and join us for!  We plan to bring together members and allies from across the state in a 750 person gathering to share our victories, stand in solidarity with one another, demonstrate our power, and position the organization for moving forward.  We'll have members from New York City, Westchester, Orange and Dutchess Counties.  We'll be from cities and from the rural areas.  We'll be young and old.  We'll be African-Americans, Latinos, Asians and Caucasians standing together.  We'll be English speakers and Spanish speakers and bilingual speakers.  We'll talk about housing, jobs, the safety net, transportation, resilient communities, criminal justice and participatory democracy.  And we'll be building power to WIN on all of our issues in the months to come!  Save the date and get ready!  And, if you want to help us build towards it, JOIN US for one of the planning meetings or simply come in to your local office and help out!  Contact Aaron Jones ( for more information or click HERE.

The East Harlem Neighborhood Plan has been released! After almost 10 months of working on a community based plan to inform a proposed rezoning of the neighborhood, Community Voices Heard, the City Council Speaker, the Manhattan Borough President, and Manhattan Community Board 11 are excited to step into the next phase of our work around affordable housing development, public housing improvements, and job creation. (Read More)

PARTICIPATORY BUDGETING New York City (PBNYC) Vote Week Is Coming; Get Ready! Starting Saturday March 26 through April 3rd thousands of NYC residents across 28 City Council Districts will come out to vote on how to spend part of the public budget to fund projects that help better their community. Last year over 50,000 voted through PBNYC and this year we are looking to increase that! CLICK HERE to find out if you live in a participating district and sign up to volunteer. CVH will be doing outreach in multiple districts to ensure we get the information out there and we need as many people as possible to make that happen.

After 20 years of fighting to end the unjust Work Experience Program (WEP), Community Voices Heard successfully got HRA Commissioner Banks to commit to ending the program by the end of 2016. But the work continues as we work to ensure the new system actually works for those receiving public assistance. (Read More)

NYC Is NOT the only place that lacks affordable housing! After multiple lobby visits, committee and budget presentations with legislators from Westchester County, leaders won $100,000 for a county wide housing needs assessment. The needs assessment will serve as a blue print to know what types of housing needs to be created, preserved or improve.  Leaders are meeting with representatives from the County Executive's office to ensure the funding is implemented to begin the process for the study.

Orange On January 31, 2015, 130 community members and regional allies gathered in a gymnasium in Middletown, NY to raise their voices, chanting: 'Si se puede!'

In recent months, member-leaders began to build a movement in Orange County- holding house meetings, sharing stories and talking to allies to get to the bottom of a widely felt issue: the lack of drivers licenses for immigrants in New York State. (Read More)

Thank you so much for your continued support of and participation in Community Voices Heard.  For over 20 years CVH has built the power of low-income communities to fight towards social and economic justice. In 1994, CVH was founded by a group of women on welfare and since then we have grown into a powerful state-wide, multi-chapter organization. With this growth and increased power, CVH remains true to our mission as a membership-led organization, committed to building power and to the grassroots leadership of low-income people.  We write today to announce an upcoming leadership transition at CVH. After almost sixteen years with the organization, Sondra Youdelman will be departing as the Executive Director in order to pass the torch to a new leader.  Read the rest of the letter HERE.

The Executive Director position has been posted to our website.  Please help us spread the word and find strong candidates for the role.  For more information, contact Michelle Perez (
