Westchester County

Community Voices Heard is building a powerful organization of low-income people of color to fight for racial and economic justice in Westchester County. After a year-long County-wide expansion effort, CVH-Westchester currently has active leadership hubs in White Plains, Yonkers, Peekskill and Ossining, with plans to grow additional hubs in Mt Vernon, New Rochelle, Port Chester and Mt Kisco. CVH member-leaders from across the county have created a Westchester People's Agenda which they launched in October of 2014. The People's Agenda demands truly affordable housing and access to jobs for Westchester's low-income residents. Since launching the agenda, CVH member-leaders have already fought for and won a $1 million increase in county funding for childcare subsidies and after-school programs and have "banned the box" that asks job applicants whether they have been convicted of a felony on city applications in Yonkers and White Plains. In June of 2015, CVH-Westchester member-leaders held a People's Assembly to Combat the Housing Crisis. Member-leaders are now pushing forward a long-term campaign to fight for truly affordable housing and against gentrification in Westchester County.

Latimer vs. Astorino for Westchester County exec: Letters

We were encouraged that The Journal News co-hosted the Oct. 24 Westchester County Executive debate between Rob Astorino and George Latimer, but the wide-ranging event only underscores the need for a night dedicated to the issue that has brought attention to Westchester like no other — housing.
