Our Work

CVH is unique in that we are the only organization working state-wide in New York City, Yonkers, and the Mid-Hudson Valley focusing on welfare reform, job creation, and public housing that is run, directed and informed by the perspective of poor people, particularly women of color. We have consistently been the organization that brings low-income people's voices and leadership to the forefront of strategizing constructive solutions and organizing from an economic justice perspective.
Evolution of CVH
We believe that Community Voices Heard's successful evolution over the last five years can be instructive for other social change organizations and the broader social justice movement. We have transitioned from a single-issue, NYC-based grassroots community organizing group into a multi-issue, statewide organization of low-income families, taking on new issues and new strategies in the process. In addition, CVH has weathered the loss of a founder to illness and completed a successful transition from the founding Director and Board to a new Director and expanded Board. The organizational growth and evolution was successful due to good strategic planning, the hard work of CVH member and staff leadership managing growth, a strong culture of training and supporting new staff, and the partnership, investment and support of many foundation and donor partners.
